Ontario has introduced legislation in an effort to stop puppy mills, the first in a list of animal protection measures it hopes to implement over the next few months.
The province is attempting to make it illegal to inbreed, breed a female dog more than three times in a two year period and breed a female dog younger than one year old.
The province also will make separating puppies from mothers before eight weeks of age illegal and make it illegal from breeding dogs in poor environments.
Ontario is also setting its sights on banning certain medical procedures for cats and dogs including declawing, debarking, ear cropping and tail docking.
