Province is adding mental health workers to OPP Call Centres

Provincial government announced it as part of the 2021 Budget

The Provincial Government is added mental health workers to the staff at the Ontario Provincial Police Call Centres as part of Ontario’s 2021 Budget.

The program is expected to offer immediate support for people experiencing mental health crisis in hopes of getting people the right supports and possibly diverting them to appropriate mental health services.

The Province has added $12.5 million dollars over 3 years for the move.

They have committed to $3.8 billion over a decade for funding mental health and addiction supports.

There are increases in the short term with $175 million additionally being spent through 2022.

Mental supports for post secondary students have also been announced; whether attending in person or virtually and also targeted at vulnerable parts of the student population.

Four mobile mental health clinics have also been announced. They will service rural and underserved communities.

They are expected to be up and running by this summer.
