The committee, Protect Our Waterways – No Nuclear Waste is concerned the development of the Nuclear Waste Management Organizations Deep Geological Repository (DGR) could have adverse affects on South Bruce and neighbouring municipalities.
The committee, which has yellow “no nuke dump” signs to pledge their protection of the environment and economy believes the transportation of waste could be unreliable and could impact cattle farmers and the agriculture field. Chair for POW-NNW, Michelle Stein questions if consumers would purchase beef knowing it was produced next to or raised beside a DGR.
Once built, the proposed DGR in South Bruce would be eligible to receive nuclear waste for nearly 70 years. POW-NNW is concerned about the form of storage of waste. The committee wants to ensure the protection of water and ability to grow food for future generations.
