A transfer of Perth Meadows to United Way Perth Huron for its United Housing campaign caused some discussion in North Perth council on Monday.
Perth Meadows has long been operating with the Municipality, originating from the Perth Adult Life Care Residences but a report notes slow sales of the apartment life lease units has led to financial issues for the PALCR and in 2014 when a Request for Proposals was made to sell the property, it was not considered an attractive investment at the time.
In April last year, United Way Perth Huron presented an offer to transfer Perth Meadows to their housing division in a closed meeting.
Delegations came to council expressing their concern on the move as they had only found out about this move only recently.
CAO Kris Snell says this move will not affect residents at Perth Meadows.
“The day to day life at Perth Meadows will remain unchanged, the leases are legal agreements between us or the previous non for profit board. They are transferable and they are legally binding no matter who owns the property” said Snell.
Snell adds this move still builds on councils moves to make sure Perth Meadows remains as an affordable place for those 55 and older.
Councilor Richardson made note with the delegates who spoke to council there needs to be more time to keep the residents up to date on the workings of this transfer who said they should defer to the next meeting to allow residents to stay more informed ahead of the transfer which was passed.
