North Perth council is looking at a speed limit change on Perth Line 88 in Kurtzville.

Council spent time on Monday discussing the move of the area to be dropped from 60km/hour to 40km as residents within the village limits of Kurtzville have said some drivers speed through the area at 80km and they feel a drop in speed will bring in safer results.

Councilor Lee Anne Andriessen who brought forward the motion says some measures in place currently in the area are not something for the long term.

“I did notice some electronic speed signs there already… the sign there at the moment is only temporary its not permanent” said Andriessen.

Council discussed the matter eventually agreeing to instead drop the speed limit to 50km/hour while also petitioning the county to look into having the area as a “Community Safety Zone.”

Doug Kellum and Dave Johnston voted against the motion. Both councilors were against the move citing the precedent it could set for surrounding areas.

The speed limit change cannot be completed until it heads to the county level and approved then.
