Perth County Revisiting Surplus Farm Dwelling Policy

County Council asking for residents input

The Perth County Council is currently revisiting the Surplus Farm Dwelling Policy as part of an Official Plan Review.

Council recently held a public meeting to get input on the 4 year old policy and adjust it as needed to keep it as robust as possible based on applications. Proposed amendments include keeping barns on severed properties as long as they don’t house livestock from the formerly adjacent farm.

The property must be usable as an additional building to the habitable home to be severed, the admissibility of a home-based business on a severed residence just as long as it doesn’t outgrow the property, the ability to keep and maintain a small amount of animals on the property and the removal of the requirement that any severed property and it’s former farmland property be both in Perth County once the severance is undertaken.

Perth County Council is accepting questions and input to these proposed changes on their website at perthcounty.ca.
