Perth County and other areas of Ontario will start today with its annual rabies prevention vaccine-bait drop across the area.
From today until mid-September, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will distribute rabies-vaccine baits for wildlife in Perth County.
Due to an initial outbreak of rabies in raccoons in 2015, the ministry has distributed more than 6 million vaccine baits and tested more than 20,000 wildlife samples across the province.
The bait dropping has been its success as numbers of positive rabies cases has dropped nearly 50 percent every year since 2016.
The khaki-green coloured bait is made of wax-fat and smells like marshmallows to bait animals.
A visible “do not eat” note can be found on the bait. If found, residents are asked to not touch the bait and leave it alone.
