The Perth County OPP sent out an advisory to residents today to let the public know and understand the risks and strain on police resources when a vehicle is stolen.

Police have seen a number of stolen vehicles in the last few years and the risk to the public is the biggest concern. They say the people stealing the vehicles are almost always involved with illegal drug use and may be driving while impaired.

Also they say most do not have a proper driver’s license and have no regard for the safety of others on the roadway.

Stolen vehicles are used to commit other crimes as well Police say, such as break and enters or fuel thefts and they will flee at dangerous speeds when police attempt to stop the vehicle.

Perth County OPP has responded to close to 80 reports of stolen vehicles in the last year alone. This is an increase from 60 last year and 70 in 2019.

Tips police say to help prevent the theft of your vehicle including locking it, do not leave keys accessible, ensure your property is property lit, install security features and store smaller vehicles indoors if possible.
