Huron County OPP are looking for space in Wingham given a sharp increase of calls for service in town.
Detachment Commander Jason Youman spoke to council on August 8th providing an update to recent policing data in Wingham.
Youman says so far this year police have had to respond to 860 calls in Wingham, 223 of them being on Josephine Street.
Youman adds for the most part, calls have been for petty theft and the increase means they need a dedicated space for police in Wingham.
“Sometime individuals will take advantage of different businesses open on Josephine Street. A lot of times that’s where our petty occurrences are like shoplifting.” said Youman.
Staff has been directed to work alongside OPP to look into uses of municipal space and to report back to council at a later date.
