OPP investigating traffic stop by Police Impersonator

The incident happened on Highway 4 just north of Hensall

 

Huron County OPP officers, including investigators from the Crime Unit, are actively investigating a traffic stop that was conducted last night by someone impersonating a police officer.

At approximately 6:15pm on April 22nd an individual was driving northbound on London Road (Highway 4) just north of Hensall when they noticed they were being followed by a black sedan. The driver of the sedan activated his police style emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop.

The male suspect exited his vehicle and approached the driver and demanded to know their destination. After a brief interaction, the suspect then returned to his vehicle and left.

The drive returned home and reported the suspicious encounter to police.

The male suspect is described as:

  • approximately early 40’s in age
  • About 5’5″ in height
  • thin build
  • short dark hair with a moustache
  • wearing a police jacket having POLICE emblazoned across the chest
  • carrying a police style portable radio

The suspect vehicle is described as an unmarked black sedan equipped with emergency lights on the roof.

Please not the OPP does not conduct traffic stops for the sole purpose of trying to determine whether someone is complying with the Province’s Stay at Home Order.

Some officers and off-duty officers may not be wearing uniforms but they will be able to provide you with the name of their service, detachment, badge number, rank and produce a badge and warrant card without delay. A uniformed officer may be requested to attend the location should the need arise.
