Ontario Realtors issued a press release today calling on the Provincial Government to cut red tape and build on the More Homes More Choice Act 2019 by ending the restriction on the conversion of single family homes into rental & multiple dwelling unit stock.

Currently it is illegal in places such as Toronto to convert a single family home into a townhouse, duplex, triplex or four plex without a zoning by-law change.

This says OREA causes delays, costs money to home owners and leaves people stranded with limited rental inventory.

OREA CEO Tim Hudak says the restriction, called exclusionary zoning policies are what’s at the heart of the affordability crisis in housing.

The changes they would like to see is changes to the planning act to implement as-of-right zoning in Ontario in the highest demand urban neighbourhoods.
