The Ontario government is investing $2 million dollars to expand closed circuit television systems across the province, an essential took they say for detecting criminal activity and keeping communities safe.
The move is funded through the Ontario CCTV Grant and is said to help police and municipal partners purchase CCTV equipment in 2021-22 in areas with high rates of criminal activity including gun and gang violence.
The CCTV Grand program was announced last August and is providing police with a total of $6 million over 3 years to expand CCTV systems in their communities and improve public safety.
All municipal and First Nations police services, as well as the OPP, can apply for funding for the second year of the program.
This grant brings the province’s total investment through the Ontario Guns, Gangs and Violence Reduction Strategy to $112 million.
This is in addition to $17 million invested as part of the Community Safety and Policing Grant which addresses provincewide issues of gun and gang violence, sexual violence, harassment and human trafficking.
