The Wellington County OPP are advising everyone to follow safe internet practices after a victim in Centre Wellington is out $500 in a case of Online Sextortion.
On January 25th police received a report of the incident in which the victim was contacted by an unknown person on Snapchat. The suspect and victim exchanged intimate images. The suspect then gained access to the victim’s Instagram account and threated to send the intimate images to the victim’s friends and family. The victim sent over $500 to the suspect but when they demanded more they contacted police.
The OPP reminds everyone to not engage in conversations with strangers or share intimate images online.
If someone similar should happen they say to stop all communication immediately and not to comply with threats. Contact police on what next steps to take.
Keep copies of all messages sent and other info such as usernames, social media accounts etc.
