The municipality will assume ownership at the Atwood Lions rink with a group of volunteers to operate the rink.

Since last week the rink was ordered closed as the Lions did not have appropriate insurance.

While original comments suggested the Lions obtain insurance and maintain ownership, comments switched during Monday’s council meeting.

In terms of having the rink reopened, which Councilor Dave Johnston says would be great for March Break, Jeff Newell says it will depend on the weather conditions.

“With the warm temperatures we experienced this past weekend, it might be a challenge I don’t know what state the ice is in. We would also need to have a meeting with the volunteers to make sure they meet all the criteria which would be required from a volunteer base.” said Newell.

North Perth will take ownership of the rink to assume responsibility for insurance as the cost for the Lions to maintain insurance can be costly for the organization.

Council approved the 2nd option for a solution 9-0. Mayor Todd Kasenberg did not vote citing a conflict of interest.
