North Perth has approved to impose a new bylaw which changes the rules on open-air fires.

The new by-law will affect both recreational and non-recreational fires.

For recreation, fires are permitted both in urban and rural areas with the fire being contained in a pre-approved appliance, burn barrels are not permitted.

For non-recreation, fires will only be allowed in rural areas and requires a permit.

The Fire Chief must also be notified at least one hour before of a non-recreational fire.

As Fire Chief Janny Pape says, non-rec fires cannot be lit at similar times to that as an urban based campfire.

“Daytime hours are when fires can be lit in the rural wards and it’s a little bit more specific when we have a burn permit whereas the more urban wards you can have a campfire during the evening hours.” said Pape.

The Fire Chief also can call a fire ban should it seen as a necessary move to protect everyone in North Perth
