North Huron council has approved the rental of a temporary sand filter for use at its Blyth Sewage Treatment Plant.
The need arose after an on-site filter failure at the facility.
The mobile disc filter trailer comes at a cost of $40,000 per month to the Municipality and would be supplied by Veolia Mobile Services.
The overall cost for 6-months operation including other related expenses was $400,000.
Wingham Ward Councillor Mitch Wright says they need a permanent solution as soon as possible.
“We should be paying overtime for them to get this design done as fast as possible because we’re looking at 40,50,60,000 plus a month. We should be focusing on getting this process done. We’re going to be bleeding a lot of money here until we get these sand filters replaced.” said Wright.
The cost of a permanent replacement filtration system was estimated by Director of Public Works and Facilities Dax McAllister at $2-3 million.
