Minto Choosing to Move Strong Mayor Powers to Council and Staff

Minto Council has chosen to delegate the strong mayor powers given by the province to go back to council and staff.

These powers allow heads of council to propose bylaws and pass them with support of one third of councilors, veto bylaws as well as hire and fire department heads but was widely criticized by council members during a meeting last week.

Mayor Dave Turton says its important to respect the process but that there is a better way to support municipalities.

“I mean you can’t really do anything about it, you accept it, you thank them, thank the government for thinking about us but we’d rather you think about us in reference to more infrasutcutre money. More consistent money to each municipality so we can set our budgets and go forward.” said Turton.

Minto has been far from the only municipality in the area to reject the idea of strong mayor powers as its been almost completely agreed to delegate them across Midwestern Ontario.
