May is Community Living Month. It’s the month when all of Ontario celebrates the many successes of creating inclusive communities in our own neighbourhoods.
Tracy Wareham Manager of Support Services at Community Living tells us how the organization got started.
“We are an agency that started in 1958. It was started by a group of concerned parents in need of a school for their children with developmental disabilities.”
The organization has come a long way in the last 63 years. They offer a wide variety of services to those individuals that could use a little assistance in their daily lives.
“We provide a variety of services. We provide supports to adults. Anyone 18 years or older that has a developmental disability. We do provide residential support. We have some individuals that live in 24 hour supportive housing. We also support some individuals that live in their own apartments and some that live with their own families.”
The great services that Community Living provides also extend into the workplace. Tracy explains how they are able to help with employment support.
“Working with people for career readiness, work readiness and providing support in a job situation. So if they require support in the workplace we would provide that as well.”
Community Living is funded through the Ontario government but they are always in need of funding to above and beyond for their clients.
“We do do a lot of fundraising or we try to do fundraising activities and events. It always helps to supplement the supports we provide for people.”
