Expected tax level didn't increase but assessments did

When it comes to taxes most times up is the only direction.

In the township of Mapleton the reverse may be true if they approve their 2021 budget as it stands now.

They are forecasting a 2.17% percent reduction in taxes next year as part of the second year of a multi-year budget.

Financial Direction John Morrison says ratepayers would receive a reduction of 10 dollars per 100 thousand dollars of assessment.

The reasons behind it is that the tax levy remains at $8.5 million dollars or a 0% increase but assessments went up 1.4%.

So the township received more tax revenue than they were anticipating in the current tax year.

Don’t expect the reduction to continue as there is planned an equal increase to this reduction in 2022.
