The Township of Mapleton Mayor Gregg Davidson has advised that further discussion is needing among leaders of the 7 member municipalities before a decision is made to lift the local state of emergency for the area.

The state has been in force since March 23, 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Province of Ontario as a whole let their latest state of emergency expire on February 9th and Mapleton Councillor Michael Martin says it’s time to consider lifting the local emergency status.

The issue has been anticipated since the province let their declaration expire.

Concerns with lifting it locally include whether municipalities could keep their buildings closed to the public without the declaration in place.

This is thought to be dictated at the Provincial level by the colour coded provincial Covid-19 protocols currently in place.

Other things such as future emergency funding from the province are thought to be contingent on a local designation.
