Wellington North is fronting utility bills for water and wastewater to landowners and landlords when tenants don’t pay said bills.
Council supported a recommendation from township staff on any new water/wastewater utility accounts being opened by landowners and not from tenants.
CAO Brooke Lambert says having tenants set up accounts is convenient for the landlord but also has allowed these bills to go unpaid.
Mayor Andy Lennox pointed out some renters have been exploiting a rule which doesn’t allow power to be cut for nonpayment during the winter months and can only be disconnected during the warmer months.
