Tuesday marked the start of a pilot project in Huron-Kinloss of enacting a bylaw which approves the use of golf carts of specific roads.
The pilot project will treat golf carts as motor vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act and drivers will be expected to follow all rules on the road.
Specific requirements must be met to drive a cart on specific roads.
- drivers must have an Ontario drivers license
- Only operated within the Township of Huron-Kinloss
- Can only be operated to a maximum speed of 50 km/h
- Can’t be driven on road in December through March
- Can’t be capable of travelling faster than 32 km/h on a level surface
- Can not tow other vehicles
- Slow moving vehicle sign must be mounted on rear of car
- Must not carry passengers younger than 8
- Adequate night time lighting is required if operated 30 mins before sunset or 30 minus after sunrise
- Daytime running lights required at all times
- Can’t carry combustible fuel, except in it’s own fuel tank
- Must be driven in the far-right lane
- Drivers are subject to all Highway Traffic Act rules of road and penalties ($2500 maximum fine for violating any of the regulations)
Golf cars must have the following safety equipment
- Steering wheel
- Service brakes
- Parking or emergency brakes
- Rear-view mirror
- Horn
- Good quality tires
- Daytime running lights
- Turn signals
- Brake lights
- Reflectors
A license plate or insurance is currently not needed.
