Huron County OPP is once again reminding vehicle owners to be vigilant and take some basic action to prevent automobile theft.

The advisory comes after numbers were released indicating stolen vehicles are up 18% from last year in Huron County. Police say if you are careless and uninterested in locking your vehicle and pocketing the key, you could be the next victim.

So far this year the OPP has investigated 66 stolen vehicles. At the same time last year the figure was 56.

Over half of the cases involved unlocked vehicles that were left with a vehicle key in the vehicle.

The most common vehicle stolen is pickup trucks, with them representing 1/3 of all vehicles stolen this year.

Over 60% of vehicles were stolen between the hours of 9 pm and 6 am.
