A local citizens advocacy group in Stratford is creating a stir in the current Municipal Election in an awareness campaign they are running in the City.
The group was one of the driving forces in opposition to a Ministerial Zoning Order in relation to a proposed float-glass factor that had been planned for newly annexed land in the City of Stratford.
The issue now is the group’s use of signs from that opposition with a newly added sticker advising voters that the group doesn’t forget the past issue.
Steering Committee Member Sharon Collingwood talks about what they are facing.
“The election act gives you two reasons why you can’t put up a sign; number 1 is if there is a yes or no question on the ballot and number 2; if the sign advocates for or against a candidate. There is no candidates on our signs and there is no yes or no question on the ballot.”
The group has been given a deadline of this Friday to have their signs removed or face a $25,000 fine for violating the election act. The group has requested further clarification from the City as to the exact issue that needs to be amended.
