Since the start of the Pandemic the Friendship Centre in St. Marys has recognized the importance of accessible programming for everyone in their community.
The Centre’s telephone programs ensure that residents who do not use the internet can still have meaningful connections with others.
Their team began delivering activities virtually first through Facebook LIVE, then Zoom but then also they realized they needed something for people without internet.
They then rapidly rolled out free telephone based programming in April of last year with the mission of supporting seniors experiencing isolation, technological barriers, transportation difficulties and vision impairment.
The schedule includes fitness classes, museum lectures, short stories, travelogues and reassurance calls. Social events include knit and chat, men’s coffee talk, trivia and games.
More recently recipe sharing also became popular.
