Fire Chief Ed Smith Announces Retirement

Ed Smith served as fire chief for 20 years, 44 years of service

 

North Perth Fire Chief Ed Smith has announced his retirement after 44 years of service.

Smith will hang up the hat in October. He began his career at 21 joining the Elma Logan Fire Department. In 24 years of service as a volunteer as an Elma Logan volunteer, his ability to lead and protect the community helped him become the Volunteer Fire Chief.

In 2001 Elma, Wallace and Listowel joined together and Ed Smith became the first full time fire chief of North Perth. Smith serving as Fire Chief for 20 years.

Fire Chef Ed Smith went above and beyond even outside the community. Smith was key in assisting MPP Randy Pettapiece in developing the private members bill, the Rea and Walter Act. The bill currently is awaiting review at a legislative committee and a final vote in legislature.

Smith is widely reconized and respected among his Ontario peers and by the Ontario Fire Marshall. He was nominated in 2015 by his peers and awarded the Alf Stone Award for his outstanding work with the fire department and within the community.
