Salvage teams have finally set free the EverGiven, a container ship which completely blocked global trade through the Suez Canal after being stuck for a week.
The container ship had been stuck in the canal since last Tuesday taking a team of tugs and dredgers offloading 20,000 containers to lighten the vessel and allow it to be pulled and refloat. High tide also aided in refloating the vessel.
10 percent of global trade, 7 percent of the worlds oil takes part in the Suez Canal, almost 20,000 ships pass through it every year. An estimated $400 million travels through the canal per hour.
350 vessels are still waiting to pass on either side of the canal.
The EverGiven will be pulled toward the Great Bitter Lake and undergo technical inspection.
