It takes an astute business person to see a potential problem and come up with a solution that not only fixes the potential problem but also creates new opportunities in the solution.
This is what a group of farmers in Huron County did in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Courtney Lang, General Manager of Eat Local Huron explains.
“A couple of the farmers here in Huron County in the midst of Covid last winter were a bit worried where they could find a stable place to sell their products. Markets were getting cancelled and with all the restrictions they weren’t sure what the future of their business was. Tamara McMillan from Firmly Rooter Farm and 2 others submitted a grant to OMAFRA and we were able to get a grant to get us going.”
What the Eat Local Huron service actually is in terms of what it provides the customer is quite simple. Courtney explains.
“So basically the service is for producers and farmers to safely sell their products and for consumers to access them safely. It’s supper easy. You head to our website at eatlocalhuron.ca There is a big orange shop now button. Our online store is open for orders Wednesday from 9am until Sunday at 9pm for deliveries the following Wednesday. You create an account with your email and your address. You put some things in your cart and check out. You can pay online. Then your order wills how up on your front door step the following week.”
Besides the ease of use and convenience for customers there is also a financial benefit to farmers as well.
“Basically the producers set the price for their product and then we just add a small fee on top to cover our operations.”
The Eat Local Huron Local Food Delivery service is available to all residents of Huron County currently. Anyone that would like to see what they offer, possibly place an order and book a delivery the following Wednesday can visit eatlocalhuron.ca.
