With National School Bus Safety Week continuing, the message still continues to be delivered on the importance of drivers being aware and alert during school hours.

According to the OPP 20,000 school buses transport 833,000 Ontario student to and from school and drivers still drive past stopped school buses with red lights flashing and the stop arm out.

John Chapman with Newry Coach Line says locally they are still dealing with the issue of other drivers not being aware.

“We’re finding this year especially that the motoring public is not real observant and not safe. We’re having a host of issues of people running our overhead lights, blowing stop signs to make sure they remain in front of us so the task of the driver to maintain that level of safety is getting harder.” said Chapman.

Chapman adds Wednesday is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day saying it doesn’t matter what company a bus driver works for, they continue to work hard to ensure the safety of kids heading to and from school.
