In Wellington County the situation will CUPE is similar to that everywhere else in the province.

CUPE Local 256 President Bill Foster says its all about Bill-28 and what it takes away from his and all of CUPE’s members.

“We are basically protesting the legislation that was passed by Ford & Lecce. It doesn’t give us the right to bargain to get a fair agreement. It basically stripped all our rights away to get a fair and equitable collective agreement.”

In terms of timelines for how long the strike could last Foster kept it simple.

“We are just taking it day by day. We are hoping something happens. We don’t want to be on the protest line, we want to be back to work.”

In Wellington County schools have remained open.

The Upper Grand District School Board says it will assess each day to determine if schools will remain open but adds as time goes on it will not be sustainable without their valued CUPE employees.
