Following Minto being on the list of municipalities to receive Strong Mayor Powers from the province, some council members have voiced their opinions on such a move.
These powers allow heads of council to propose bylaws and pass them with support of one third of councilors, veto bylaws as well as hire and fire department heads.
Deputy Mayor Jean Anderson voiced her distaste saying this almost gives off the impression the town isn’t doing their job.
“The message seems to be is that we are not building quickly enough to suit the Ontario government. We’d build quicker if they funded us better we’ve been asking for an increase in our base funding for years and they are implying that we are not considering the ramifications of our water system, our sewer system. Towns are building at unprecedented rates.” said Anderson.
Council following discussion passed a motion to get a staff report and review the legislation and how this tool will be used in Minto.
