The community has continued to shine to help make an outdoor memorial rink in Mitchell become a reality.
The CS8 Memorial Outdoor Rink targeted to be at Keterson Park is in memory of Carter Schoonderwoerd, a well decorated hockey player who in 2021 was found deceased on his family farm from suicide.
The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group ushered their support for the outdoor rink with a $20,000 grant for the project.
Carters father, Joe says the community has not slowed down in their own support, saying sometimes those that give is its just their way of getting their own relief on such an important message that is more than just an outdoor rink.
“For some people just giving money gives them a sense of relief. They can say they are doing something. It’s all going to a good cause and hopefully promotes more mental awareness in our community and help kids. Not just kids but all of us.” said Schoonderwoerd
The 68th Mitchell U13 Hockey Tournament which took place last month held a breakfast and silent auction where proceeds went to the outdoor rink, bringing in much support.
