The conversation of having school bus stop arm cameras locally has been something talked about for a long time and John Chapman, Owner of Newry Coach Lines says dragging feet and waiting has gone on long enough.
Chapman came to council Monday night to propose a new plan and get action taken.
He believes a system used in Sudbury as a pilot project will produce results and can prove to be better than the previously discussed AMPS (Administrative Monetary Penalty System)
Chapman says its an incident last week which has shown the lack of awareness from drivers and enough is enough.
“Last Thursday on Line 78 we had a child whose mother literally dragged him off the road because a car parked waiting behind the school bus decided they were more important and pulled out around the school bus which was stopped and the only thing that saved that child was the mother grabbing his backpack and pulling him off the road” said Chapman.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the time for debate on this over. It needs to happen.”
Some questions were raised by council such as the success of the pilot project in Sudbury which Chapman added has gone on for two years and has seen positive results.
There is still more to be done on the matter which could be brought forward at the next budget meeting for North Perth on Wednesday.
