Centre Wellington Shoots Down Letter of Support for Hospice

Centre Wellington hospice would offer medical assistance in dying

Centre Wellington has voted against a letter directed to the Ministry of Health in support of a hospice within the community.

Dr. Alan Simpson spoke to council about the county donating land at Wellington Place in Aboyne for a hospice which he and another doctor have taken a lead at getting a facility in the county.

Simpson had hoped a letter of support from council however not everyone was in support including Stephen Kitras who wondered why the group hadn’t partnered with Hospice Wellington.

Simpson said was due to policy as Hospice Wellington doesn’t allow medical assistance in dying, whereas the Centre Wellington group would.

Kitras would not support the move, saying as a religious person he is horrified to support euthanasia.
