Centre Wellington animal control bylaw allowing up to 10 hens per residential property

Residents need to register their coop and pay $125 fee

There is good news for residents of Centre Wellington looking for the freshest eggs.

The Animal Control By-Law for the Township allows the keeping of up to 10 hens per residential lot.

The coop must be located at least 3 meters from the side and rear of the lot, they must be located at the back of the property, have a maximum size of 10 square meters, have a roof enclosure and fully enclosed to prevent escape.

They also must be registered at the Centre Wellington website.

Hen Coop Requirements

  • be located at least 3 metres from side and rear lot line
  • be located in the rear yard
  • be a maximum size of 10m2
  • be less than 2 metres in height
  • provide a roof enclosure
  • be fully enclosed to prevent escape
  • have a perch of at least 20cm for each hen

To register your coop you have two options:

  1. Complete and submit an on-line application form online and remit payment by mail or in person at the Township Municipal Office
  2. Complete a paper application and submit to the Township together with payment

After you complete the application and submit the registration fee of $125, an inspection will be scheduled.
