Canada facing uncertainty on possible EU restrictions on vaccine exports

EU is facing issues with manufacturers keeping up with their Domestic Vaccine needs

Canada’s Covid-19 vaccine deliveries from Pfizer Biontech have stopped this week and will be cut in half next week due to a retooling of the plant in Belgium that supplies our country.

This stoppage is being met with threats from the European Union that should issues with manufacturing vaccine arise in the future that limits of exports of Covid-19 may be imposed.

Canada currently sources both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine from facilities overseas.

Europe had a big part to play in both Pfizer and Modernas vaccine investing some $4 billion dollars in European vaccine development.

Canada’s investment in research mainly went to Canadian developers.

Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott chimed in on the threat this afternoon from Mississauga.

“I believe that’s its necessary to strongly stand up for Canadian access. This is something I know the Canadian Prime Minister is going to do. We will do everything we can in Ontario to ensure that that supply comes forward as well.”
