The federal government is stepping in over the current labour dispute between the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference and the major railways.
Negotiations broke down at 12:01am on Thursday with CN Rail and Canadian Pacific Kansas City announcing they were locking out their employees who are members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference but it didn’t take too long for Federal Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon to intervene and force binding arbitration on the parties.
MacKinnon has invoked Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, directing the Canada Industrial Relations Board to start the process of binding arbitration.
MacKinnon says millions of Canadians rely on our railways everyday and the impacts cannot be understated and they extend to every corner of the country.
