The commissioner of Correctional Service Canada says serial killer Paul Bernardo will stay in a Quebec medium security prison he was transferred to earlier this year.
An 85 page review shared by Commissioner Anne Kelly showed Bernardo’s security classification was reviewed 14 times between 1999-2022 with each time meeting the criteria to be moved.
His most recent review shared Bernardo scored a moderate escape risk, moderate to institutional adjustment and a high risk to public safety.
Kelly says a medium security prison will still be as secure as a maximum.
Opposition parties have called on Public Safety Minister Mendicino to resign over his handling of the issue, saying Canadians were owed an explanation given the severity of Bernardo’s crimes.
Bernardo is serving an indeterminate life sentence for the kidnapping, assault and murders of 15 year old Kristen French and 14 year oil Leslie Mahaffy in the early 90’s near St Catharines.
