Water contamination near Belwood Lake in April is believed to have been caused by illegal dumping.
A report from Centre Wellington’s Wastewater Services Manager Gerry Atkinson showed contamination was first found in a storm sewer on Queen Street in April in the township and become more public on April 11th when residents noticed a “petroleum sheen” in a creek leading to the lake.
Cleanup took place on April 30th with security footage indicated the contamination likely came from the surrounding area.
Investigation found no fuel oil in the soil and over the summer fuel concentrations dropped to zero.
Cleanup efforts cost the township around $82,743.
