A big eyesore in Listowel has been one of garbage bins overflowing, being taken advantage of by illegal dumping with the municipality responding to address the issue.

Specifically the two dumpsters in the Inkerman and Wallace Plaza has been one targeted which staff have acknowledged has been issue since they were first put in back in 2012.

In response the municipality alongside local bylaw are installing cameras in the plaza to curb illegal dumping.

Manager of Environmental Services, Mark Hackett says they also intend to ramp up discussion and education to stop these actions across the area.

“It will be through our bylaw people who will be helping with public education. I’m sure there are people who think it’s perfectly fine to use that as a dumping area but they should be going to our landfill.” said Hackett.

As far as a timeline for when these cameras will be place, it could still be a few weeks away as this is only a recent development being addressed.
