Grand River Conservation Authority Urging Ice Safety

The Grand River Conservation Authority is warning the public against using frozen rivers, reservoirs and ponds for skating and ice fishing.

The string of warmer weather has led to significant runoff and increased water levels and flows in the Grand River watershed.

The ice on local rivers and water bodies can be very unsafe, the runoff and high water levels have weakened the ice and lifted it away from shorelines with the ice being able to break easily and should not be used for winter activities.

While colder temperatures do allow for some ice to build, daily changes in temperature, wind, precipitation and underwater currents greatly affect ice conditions.
