Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is warning residents of the increase of the tick population this year.

This comes as the population of black legged ticks who can transit the bacterium responsible for Lyme Disease to humans has been on the increase.

Given the rising temperatures, warmer winter and longer summers this has also prolonged the tick season and public health wants to make sure you’re are taking steps to prevent ticks from biting you or your pets.

Public health says its becoming more common to find ticks closer to home in residential lawns, gardens, parks and walking trails.

If you find a tick, its important to remove them off your skin using clean, fine point tweezers to grasp the head as close to the skin as possible and slowly pull straight out and to not twist or squeeze the tick.
