Huron Perth Public Health has confirmed a case of rabies in a bat from Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh.

The bat was sent for testing after it bit and individual.

The person bit is currently receiving rabies post exposure prophylaxis which prevents them from catching rabies.

This recent case marks the 1st of rabies this year and the 4th animal to test positive since January 2020 all of which had been bats.

Rabies is a viral disease which is fatal to both humans and other mammals, commonly spread by wild animals such as foxes, bats, skunks and raccoons.

If you’ve been bit or scratch by an animal you’re asked to wash the wound, seek medical attention and contact public health.
