The Minto Selects, mens broomball team kept busy recently in Kingston as they took part in the World Broomball Championships.

The championships saw a series of teams, 36 in total including 10 from the men’s division spanning from Canada, the United States and France.

The Selects entered in round robin play who snagged 3 wins with 2 ties. This was good to move onto the quarterfinals were they downed their opponent 3-1.

On to the semi finals, for the Selects against an opponent which Head Coach Archie Wilson says they know well.

“We faced that team in the Nationals in April in Saskatoon. The Minto Selects lost to that team, it’s a strong team out of Quebec. We knew we had to keep the focus and do a lot of little things right. We did actually trail 2-0 in the game but credit to the team, they stayed extremely positive, focused on what they needed to do each shift and I guess we were confident it would come back to us which it did. ” said Wilson

Off the to finals for Minto as they took down Team USA 2-1 to secure gold.

The Minto Selects stayed undefeated throughout the tournament with 6 wins and 2 ties and outscoring opponents 20-7.

Wilson says there’s plenty down the road in the next steps for the Selects.

“Our next big tournament will be in late February, we’ll have a regional qualifier to get ourselves to the provincials which we hope to win and give ourselves a trip a year from now to the Nationals. I guess our goal is to get ourselves in a position to win the Nationals in time.”
