Huron County OPP say a stolen pickup was driven off in Central Huron and caught on fire, causing damage to a nearby structure and evacuation of several nearby residences just after 1am Saturday morning.

The incident is still under investigation by police. Police received a report of a single vehicle crash down an embankment just after 1 am.

Officers located a Dodge pickup which had crashed into the trees and had started on fire.

Officers arrived within several minutes and tried to extinguish the flames, however high winds made matters worse, causing the truck and immediate area to continue burning.

Several nearby residences were evacuated and three fire departments from Goderich, Central and North Huron attended to battle the flames.

The suspect driver managed to flee the scene prior to police arrival but was later located and arrested at around 8:30 am.

The suspect remains in custody.
