Ontario Government Plans to Bypass Hearings in Long Term Care Bill

The Ontario government is working on bypassing public hearings in order to pass controversial long term care legislation.

The proposed legislation would allow hospital patients to be moved to a temporary long term care home without their consent while they wait for a bed in their preferred facility.

The legislation will not allow patients to be physically forced to move to a long term care home but Long Term Care Minister Paul Calandra says those who refuse should be charged a fee.

The government has moved a motion which advances the bill directly to a third reading which means it will not be considered by a committee or be subject to a public hearing.
