Some visitors in Stratford will soon have to pay a municipal accommodation tax.

Council approved a 4 per cent tax increase to take effect on July 1st next year.

The increase is charged on overnight and short term stays of less than a month in Stratford when visitors book a room with a local provider.

Councilor Kathy Vassilakos says this type of tax is seen just about everywhere and shouldn’t come as a shock.

“I have yet to travel in the last decade where I haven’t paid this just about anywhere across Ontario, North America or even Europe. So I don’t think this come as a surprise to most people who travel.” said Vassilakos.

Destination Stratford will receive 50 per cent of the revenues from the tax raise with the other half placed back into a reserve fund by the city.
