Perth-Wellington MP John Nater introduced Bill S-227 on Thursday in the House of Commons.

The bill, an act to establish Food Day in Canada would bring in the day on the Saturday before the first Monday in August to be known as “Food Day in Canada.”

In most provinces this would fall just before the August long weekend.

Bill S-227 originated from the Senate, introduced by Honourable Rob Black from Wellington County in November last year and passed in the Senate on May 12th.

Nater says its always important to recognize locally grown food grown in the community.

“Now more than ever it is important to champion the healthy, local food farmers and farm families grow in Canada” said Nater.

Food Day has been informally recognized in rural communities since 2003 when Wellington County food activist and University of Guelph Food Laureate Anita Stewart championed the day in support of beef farmers during the 2003 bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis
