The Town of Minto issued a reminder to residents in regards to Accessary Apartments at homes in the Municipality.
They advise that as of April of 2021 Council passed a by-law allowing for one attached or detached apartment unit per property as long as they meet the zoning by-law regulations.
They also advise that Municipal approval is required for the units to be legal.
A town building inspector must grant occupancy on the accessory dwelling prior to someone living there. They also must ensure the safety of all occupants for electrical, fire and egress requirements.
Without this being done they are not legal and will impact your insurance coverage should an incident occur as a result of the unit.
You can find more information at the Town of Minto website and their Building Department.
