The Ontario government is investing $25 million over the next two years to build up the province’s food processing capacity.
The Strategic Agri-Food Processing Fund Program announced in the 2021 Fall Economic Statement which will kick off on April 1st.
The fund aims to increase the province’s food processing capacity, strengthen its food security and position the agri-food sector for economic growth.
Ontario’s food processing sector has been faced with many challenges to process more of the food that is grown in the province as many aging plants are limited to their capacities to expand and complete by outdated equipment.
MPP for Huron-Bruce and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Lisa Thompson says this investment will create new opportunities for the food processing sector in Ontario and boost the entire supply chain.
Thompson adds by enabling more private sector investments it will increase local food production and ensure Ontario has a safe and stable food supply made right at home while driving the economy and creating local jobs.
